South Lansing, New York, is a small hamlet just north of Ithaca. Sadly, this region of New York isn’t pizza country, so DishingPizza entered Salt Point Brewing Co. with low expectations. Even the allure of Salt Point’s wood-fired oven, prominently positioned behind the counter, wasn’t enough to excite DishingPizza.

DishingPizza is always on the hunt for a diamond in the rough – stellar pizza in an unprepossessing location with little press. Salt Point Brewing hits two out of three. Salt Point considers itself a brewery first and a pizzeria second – pizza doesn’t even appear in the joint’s name.
Although the Salt Point pizza isn’t superb, it checks all the boxes. The margarita has a chewy, nicely blistered crust, decent fresh mozzarella, and a simple San Marzano tomato sauce. Like many other lesser wood-fired pizzas, this one becomes soggy in the middle.

The wood-fired pizza biz is one of degrees where the little things make all the difference – like the quality of the olive oil or texture of the fresh mozzarella. Whatever it is, Salt Point doesn’t have it – it’s good, not great.

Salt Point Brewing Co. has a nice vibe. A large outdoor area was filled with locals – families, twenty-somethings1, and retirees – when DishingPizza left. In the big pizza scheme, one might reasonably ask, “Who cares if the pizza isn’t great? It’s good enough, and it’s a great place to drink beer and hang with my friends and family.”
1 A large group of young people at a neighboring table brought a box labeled Cards Against Humanity. Could these be recent Cornell grads playing an intellectual game, conspiring to make the world a better place? Nah. Cards Against Humanity is described as “a fill-in-the-blank party game that turns your awkward personality and lackluster social skills into hours of fun!”
