On the scene since 2008, Pete’s Apizza once cornered the DMV’s New Haven-style pizza market, with locations in Columbia Heights, Friendship Heights, Silver Spring, and Clarendon. By 2019, Pete’s closed all locations except Friendship Heights — dark times, indeed, for Dishing Pizza and area pizza lovers.
Dishing Pizza has daunting pizza reviewing responsibilities and cannot keep going back to the same haunts. But every time Dishing Pizza goes back to Pete’s, it’s like coming home again. The components are individually top-notch, and together, they combine to make a world-class pizza.
Take a gander at Pete’s Apizza. Is it New Haven-style pizza in New York-style clothing (sans the severe eyewear and complicated facial hair)? It looks just like New York pizza. The only discernible difference is Pete’s crust firmness – there’s no flop factor. Try folding this New York-style and you’ll put an eye out.

Another newcomer on the New Haven-style front, the pedigreed Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, opened a Bethesda outpost in 2022. With 7.5 miles of separation between the pizzerias, it’s hardly a Sharks and Jets-style turf war. But, just like that, there’s competition for New Haven-style dominance.

In Pete’s favor, it offers a small assortment of interesting, reasonably priced salads, and a charming, umbrella-shaded outdoor space. A perfect neighborhood pizza spot. Too bad they’re only in one lucky neighborhood.
